HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION ELECTS 2000 OFFICERS
WALNUT CREEK, CA – The Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA), a statewide leadership group active in health care policy and managed care issues, has elected the following officers:

Steve
McDermott has led Hill Physicians Medical Group since 1984, when he organized it
under an exclusive management contract with PriMed, a physician group management
company which he chairs. Hill
Physicians is the largest independent practice association in the country and
largest capitated medical group in California, with 2,500 participating
physicians, 20 affiliated hospitals, and 400,000 managed care enrollees in
Northern California. It was
recently honored as the top medical group in California by the Pacific Business
Group on Health and received the Strategic Leadership Award from Arthur
Andersen. Prior to developing Hill
Physicians, McDermott was executive director of the Bay Area Emergency Medical
System and executive director of California Emergency Physicians.
He received his undergraduate degree in business from Providence College
and a master’s in Business and Health Administration from George Washington
University.
Anthony
D. Rodgers is chief executive
officer of L.A. Care Health Plan, a non-profit, publicly governed health plan
serving half a million residents of Los Angeles County.
It is one of California’s largest health plans and the largest Medicaid
health plan in the United States. In
1998, Rodgers served on the State Managed Health Care Improvement Task Force and
in both 1996 and 1997 was named by the Los
Angeles Business Journal as one of the region’s 50 most influential health
care leaders. Prior to joining L.A.
Care, he headed the Maricopa Health System, an integrated health care delivery
system in Phoenix with an annual budget of $240 million.
He received both his BA and master of science degrees from UCLA.
David
J. Kears has worked for Alameda County since 1974 and was named director of the
Health Care Services Agency in 1986. From
1993 to 1997, he also held the dual title of president and chief executive
officer of the Alameda Alliance for Health, the public-private HMO serving
county Medi-Cal beneficiaries under the State’s Medi-Cal managed care
initiative. A licensed clinical
social worker, Kears received both his BA in sociology and his MA in social
welfare from UC Berkeley. He is a
member of the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems,
County Health Executive Association of California, and other organizations
representing health care systems in the State.
Thomas
J. Davies is the healthcare
manager for the West Region of GTE Corporation.
He directs GTE’s “value purchasing” strategy for the selection,
evaluation, problem resolution, and performance reporting of 32 competing HMOs
and specialized vendors offered under GTE’s health benefits
program to more
than 80,000
employees, retirees,
and dependents in a 13-state
region.
Davies serves on the
boards of directors of the Pacific Business Group on Health, the Foundation of
the California Academy of Family Practice, and Pacific Health Advantage, the State’s recently privatized health
insurance purchasing cooperative for small employers. He received his BA from Miami University, an MPA from the
University of Pittsburgh, and his JD from the John Marshall School of Law.
Sharon
Levine, MD, has been a practicing
pediatrician with The Permanente Medical Group since 1977 and associate
executive director for the Medical Group since 1991.
She has broad responsibilities for human
resources (recruitment, compensation, clinical and management training),
diversity, public relations, health policy, and community and government
relations. Dr. Levine is board
certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the American
College of Physician Executives, California Medical Association, American
Medical Women’s Association, and American Medical Association.
She received her undergraduate degree from Radcliffe College and her MD
from Tufts University School of Medicine. Statewide,
The Permanente Medical Group employs 4,000 physicians and serves 3 million
members enrolled in Kaiser Permanente, the state’s largest HMO.
IHA
